In May 2001, CSTE requested that states and territories participate in a web-based assessment which would provide information about their public health profile and reporting requirements within their jurisdictions. This request was directed towards State Epidemiologists at each state or territorial health department.

A similar assessment was conducted by CSTE in 1997 and results can be accessed at: http://www.cste.org/nndss/reportingrequirements.htm. The 2001 assessment was more detailed, and not only inquired about reportable public health conditions under state and territorial laws, but additionally obtained information about the authority of state and territories to collect public health data, and the flow and pattern of disease reporting in jurisdictions.

A total of 51 states and 5 territories were invited to participate in this assessment. Responses were received between May 2001 and October 2001. The web-based assessment was comprised of ten questions that were completed by State Epidemiologists, Deputy State Epidemiologists and other epidemiology staff. Those states that were unable to access the web link completed a paper version of the questionnaire.

Epidemiologists from 48 states and the Commonwealth of the Northern Marina Islands, Federated States of Micronesia and Guam responded to the assessment (94% response rate for US states and 91% overall, including the territories).

State and territorial responses for questions regarding reporting profiles as well as reporting patterns for both notifiable and non-notifiable diseases and conditions can be viewed by clicking on the corresponding links below.

The following states did not provide information on their state or territorial reporting profiles and reporting patterns for notifiable and non-notifiable diseases and conditions: ASM, ME, NV, PR, SD.
