Appendix A: Industries with High Risk for Occupational Morbidity

The following industries were identified as “high risk” because they had injury and illness rates greater than 13 cases per 100 full time workers – more than twice the overall national injury and illness rate – according to the BLS Annual Survey in 1999 (the most recent data available when the indicator was originally developed).

In 1999, the BLS Annual Survey classified industries using the Standard Industry Classification (SIC) system. This system was subsequently replaced by the North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS). Since industry employment levels are available only via NAICS codes, the SIC codes below were converted to NAICS codes for inclusion in the guidelines for generating this indicator.

Technical Note:

The list of high-risk industries will be updated every five years since over time there will be some changes to the list as occupational morbidity rates for individual industries fluctuate. It is not anticipated that year-to-year changes will have significant effect on comparative or trend analyses, but these changes will be evaluated.
