NIOSH Intramural Surveillance Activities

Exposure Surveillance using OSHA’s Integrated Management Information System

OSHA’s Integrated Management Information System (IMIS) collects a variety of information including work-related exposure data. Benefits and drawbacks of using this database for hazard surveillance research are discussed as well as future research that will be conducted by NIOSH.

NHIS 2010 Occupational Health Supplement

This presentation outlines the occupational health supplement to be included in the 2010 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). The occupational health supplement to be administered in 2010 is a modification of the last administered supplement from 1988. Goals and proposed content of the supplement are included.

Surveillance of Hearing Loss and Occupational Noise Exposure using NCHS Data

Limited surveillance data exists for occupational hearing loss (OHL), workplace noise, and hearing protector device (HPD) usage. Research has been conducted by the NIOSH Surveillance Branch to help determine the national distribution of OHL, workplace noise, and HPD use by means of data available from NCHS.

Analysis of Mental Health Outcomes in Minority Farm Operators

Results of mental health data from population-based occupational health interviews conducted among farm operators (managers) in 2000 were presented. The sampling frame was designed using the USDA Census of Agriculture data. Recommendations for further studies were also discussed.

Analysis of California Cancer Registry Data

Research is being conducted to determine the feasibility of using state cancer registry data for occupational cancer surveillance. Details and preliminary findings from NIOSH’s California Cancer Registry Project are outlined in this presentation.
