Infectious Disease: Vaccine Preventable Diseases

The adult and child immunization subcommittees hold joint quarterly conference calls to discuss issues surrounding immunization and vaccine-preventable diseases. Subcommittee calls include updates from CSTE’s liaisons to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and the National Vaccine Advisory Committee (NVAC). Other discussions have included measles case classifications, case investigation protocols, vaccine barcoding projects, and the development of CSTE position statements. A measles workgroup was formed to discuss issues specific to measles and measles outbreaks. This workgroup’s calls have included presentations about outbreaks in Canada, Western Europe, and New Zealand, discussions of laboratory issues for measles, and a study of secondary measles cases.

The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) Office of Public Affairs has developed materials in response to the state's measles outbreak. One of the documents is specific to the community that has been most affected by this outbreak, and the others are more general. ODH has also produced 15 and 30 second public service announcements that have run on radio stations across the state. Public information officers in other states can contact the ODH Office of Public Affairs at (614) 644-8562 with any questions about the messaging and public information outreach activities that Ohio has been conducting.
