The Chronic Disease Epidemiology Capacity Building Subcommittee focuses on efforts to build capacity for chronic disease epidemiology. The subcommittee is currently developing an orientation manual for chronic disease epidemiologists, which will provide guidance on the skills and knowledge with which chronic disease epidemiologists should be familiar. This information will encourage more uniform knowledge among chronic disease epidemiologists. The subcommittee will also develop a chronic disease module to be included in the 2013 Epidemiology Capacity Assessment to gather more specific data about the chronic disease epidemiology workforce.
Past activities include publication of the report Essential Functions of Chronic Disease Epidemiology in State Health Departments and the 2007 position statement on state-level chronic disease epidemiology capacity, 07-CD-01.
The subcommittee was involved in translating the results of the supplemental report on chronic disease epidemiology capacity from the 2009 National Assessment of Epidemiology Capacity into state-specific profiles of chronic disease capacity. These profiles compare the results of states’ chronic disease capacity in 2009 to their reported capacity in 2003; they also show the states’ capacity compared to overall national capacity. These profiles are aggregated in a comparison summary of data from 2003 and 2009. The results of these assessments have allowed CSTE to depict trends in capacity measures, identify gaps in resources, and provide recommendations to improve capacity where needed..
