Chronic/MCH/Oral Health: Cancer

Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for over 560,000 deaths in 2009. Because cancer is a collective term for a variety of diseases resulting from an abnormal cell growth, there are numerous causes and risk factors for cancer. The Cancer Subcommittee was established to better understand and improve cancer surveillance.

In 1998, CSTE passed a position statement, 98-CD-04, to include cancer screening indicators in the National Public Health Surveillance System. Since then, cancer screening indicators have included in the collection of chronic disease indicators, and standardized cancer reporting definitions were emphasized in 2009 with position statement 09-CD-01.
