New State Epidemiologist Orientation Manual: The New State Epidemiologist’s First Days: A Planning Guide was conceived and developed by CSTE as a result of discussions with new State Epidemiologists who thought it would be useful for new State Epidemiologists to help them navigate some of the unfamiliar parts of their new job. With input from experienced State Epidemiologists, CSTE developed this manual to help newly-appointed State Epidemiologists set priorities in the first 30–120 days. The intent of this guide is to assist new State Epidemiologists refine the skills and develop relationships to be successful from the onset of their tenure.
CSTE and CDC periodically host an orientation for new State Epidemiologists. This meeting provides participants with the opportunity to become familiar with the CDC organizational structure, activities, and resources for state health departments. Objectives focus on connections with CDC subject matter experts, resources such as EIS and state-based programs, emergency communication systems including EPI-X, and the Emergency Operations Center (EOC). State Epidemiologists hear from CDC leaders about current CDC activities and are able to discuss state public health priorities and challenges.
