POSITION STATEMENT 1989-15 COMMITTEE: Environmental/Injury TITLE: Occupational Disease Injury Surveillance ISSUE: Recent efforts for protecting workers against occupational disease have emphasized regulation of workplace exposures to known hazards. A few states have initiated occupational disease surveillance. NIOSH has directly carried out such surveillance to a limited extent. It has also provided assistance to a limited number of state health departments through its SENSOR Program and other cooperative agreements for surveillance. Surveillance for occupational disease injury must be dramatically increased at the state and local level to identify previously unrecognized workplace hazards and to evaluate the effectiveness of current regulation of known hazards. POSITION TO BE ADOPTED: CSTE requests ASTHO to encourage all state public health agencies to conduct occupational disease and/or injury surveillance, and to advocate in the Congress for increased funding of NIOSH’s programmatic support of state health department occupational disease and injury surveillance activities. BACKGROUND/JUSTIFICATION: CONSULTATION WITH OTHER ORGANIZATIONS: NIOSH, ASTHO CONTACT:
