| CSTE ANNUAL MEETING CSTE POSITION STATEMENT 1996-18 COMMITTEE: Surveillance Committee TITLE: Revised Case Definitions for Public Health Surveillance: Infectious Disease ISSUE: The 1990 Case Definitions for Public Health Surveillance (MMWR 1990;39:No. RR-13) has proven to be an invaluable aid to the conduct of public health surveillance and has undoubtedly resulted in an increased consistency of surveillance data across the country. Since the case definitions were first published, there have been numerous additions and deletions to the list of communicable diseases under surveillance in the National Public Health Surveillance System, as well as numerous advances in diagnostic techniques. Use of the case definitions has pointed out some areas lacking in clarity. The document has been of such great usefulness to practicing public health professionals, as well as to others interested in public health surveillance, that there is a need to publish an updated set of case definitions. POSITION TO BE ADOPTED: 1) CSTE endorses the surveillance case definitions for the following infectious diseases and conditions in the draft Case Definitions for Public Health Surveillance: Infectious Diseases document distributed and discussed at the 1996 CSTE Annual Meeting. Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) Anthrax Chancroid Chlamydia trachomatis genital infections Cholera Coccidioidomycosis Cryptosporidiosis Diphtheria Gonorrhea Haemophilus influenzae (Invasive Disease) Hansen Disease (Leprosy) Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome Hemolytic uremic syndrome, post-diarrheal HIV infection, pediatric Legionellosis Lyme Disease Malaria Meningococcal Disease Mumps Pertussis Plague Poliomyelitis, Paralytic Psittacosis Rabies, Animal Rabies, Human Rubella Rubella, Congenital syndrome Salmonellosis Shigellosis Streptococcal disease, invasive, Group A Streptococcus pneumoniae, drug-resistant invasive disease Streptococcal toxic-shock syndrome Syphilis, Congenital Tetanus Toxic-shock syndrome Trichinosis Tuberculosis Typhoid Fever Yellow Fever Case Definitions, Diseases not Nationally Notifiable Amebiasis Aseptic Meningitis Campylobacter Infection Dengue Fever Genital Herpes Genital Warts Granuloma inguinale Leptospirosis Listeriosis Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) Mucopurulent Cervicitis Nongonococcal Urethritis Pelvic Inflammatory Disease Rheumatic fever Varicella (Chickenpox) 2) The Executive Committee will work on completion of the following case definitions which require further discussion before finalizing: Botulism Brucellosis Encephalitis, Arboviral Escherichia coli O157:H7 Hepatitis, viral Measles Pertussis Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever Syphilis Case Definitions, Diseases not Nationally Notifiable Bacterial Meningitis, Other Giardiasis Tularemia BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION: The process to revise the case definitions involved collating all definitions that had been revised by CSTE resolution since 1990. In addition, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) programs were queried for any proposed changes. The draft document was circulated to the appropriate CSTE consultants several weeks before the meeting and their comments were discussed with CDC to reach consensus where possible. Several diseases require further discussion. The CSTE membership will be polled by mail in the near future to adopt final case definitions for these diseases.
