CSTE ANNUAL MEETING

CSTE POSITION STATEMENT 1996-18

COMMITTEE: Surveillance Committee

TITLE: Revised Case Definitions for Public Health Surveillance: Infectious Disease

ISSUE: The 1990 Case Definitions for Public Health Surveillance (MMWR 1990;39:No. RR-13) has proven to be an invaluable aid to the conduct of public health surveillance and has undoubtedly resulted in an increased consistency of surveillance data across the country. Since the case definitions were first published, there have been numerous additions and deletions to the list of communicable diseases under surveillance in the National Public Health Surveillance System, as well as numerous advances in diagnostic techniques. Use of the case definitions has pointed out some areas lacking in clarity. The document has been of such great usefulness to practicing public health professionals, as well as to others interested in public health surveillance, that there is a need to publish an updated set of case definitions.

BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION: The process to revise the case definitions involved collating all definitions that had been revised by CSTE resolution since 1990. In addition, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) programs were queried for any proposed changes. The draft document was circulated to the appropriate CSTE consultants several weeks before the meeting and their comments were discussed with CDC to reach consensus where possible. Several diseases require further discussion. The CSTE membership will be polled by mail in the near future to adopt final case definitions for these diseases.
