Zika and Microencephaly

So I'm sure everyone has been soaked with the news articles Brazil's increase in microencephaly and the potential link to Zika. I've been trying to find research articles on it but can't find much. I know this stuff is very new, but I wonder what everyone thinks of this connection. Other than Brazil and a few cases in French Polynesia, do we know if there are case of microencephaly in other countries that are seeing zika? (Colombia, for instance).

I wonder what the evolutionary advantage of crossing a placental barrier would be, for a virus like zika. At best it seems like a side effect of increased viremia, but do we even have evidence of increased viremia? And I wonder if we indeed have any research that has established a biological basis of this connection.

What are your thoughts?
