Infectious Disease: Viral Respiratory Diseases Subcommittee
Subcommittee Chairs:

Lisa McHugh, PhD, MPH (PA)

Karen Martin, MPH (MN)

The Influenza and Viral Respiratory Diseases Subcommittee is dedicated to the improvement of influenza and respiratory disease surveillance, detection, and response in the U.S., including seasonal activities and pandemic preparedness. The subcommittee holds monthly conference calls and provides a forum for influenza surveillance coordinators and other respiratory disease epidemiologists at state and local health departments to discuss timely and relevant topics to further support routine and pandemic surveillance efforts. Previously discussed topics included novel influenza outbreak investigation and surveillance, long-term care facility influenza outbreaks, forecasting influenza activity, and data visualization of flu reports. The subcommittee also frequently engages with our CDC partners in the Influenza Division (ID) and Division of Viral Diseases (DVD) to share updates and address needs from a national perspective.

In addition to influenza, the subcommittee engages in discussions on RSV and COVID-19 surveillance activities and efforts. There are also multiple workgroups under the subcommittee whose scopes are dependent on member needs. Workgroups are chaired by CSTE members, and the frequency of meetings are dependent on member bandwidth. Past workgroups included ILI Surveillance Methods, Novel Influenza Planning, and RSV. Ad-hoc working groups are convened as needed, especially to support the development of influenza or respiratory viral diseases-related CSTE position statements.
