Surveillance / Informatics: SURVEILLANCE PRACTICE AND IMPLEMENTATION

Subcommittee Chair: Nancy Barrett, MS, MPH, Connecticut Department of Public Health and Sarah Solarz, MPH, Minnesota Department of Health

The Surveillance Practice and Implementation Subcommittee(SPIS)meets monthly and provides a forum to discuss practical public health surveillance issues, including topics related to CDC’s National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS), surveillance systems, data standards, surveillance methods, and workforce. The SPIS convenes peers from state, tribal, local, and territorial (STLT) public health agencies supporting surveillance across all public health domains in the development of disease agnostic and enterprise solutions. Discussion topics in this subcommittee are related to: 

  • Surveillance Systems 
  • Processes related to reporting case data to CDC through case notification (NNDSS)
  • Data Modernization Implementation 
  • Data exchange standards (e.g., US Core Data for Interoperability (USCDI), USCDI+)
  • Implementation of the Trusted Exchange Framework Common Agreement (TEFCA)
  • Interoperability with other public health data systems such as immunizations, vital records, syndromic surveillance
  • Shared services and building blocks such as master patient index, eCR filtering and ingestion tools
  • Implementation of CSTE Position Statements
  • State Reportable Conditions Assessment (SRCA)
  • Syndromic Surveillance
  • Inter-jurisdictional data exchange
  • Emergency response-related surveillance issues
  • Surveillance data standardization 
  • Improving data collection to advance health equity
  • Supporting the development of the informatics and data science workforce
