Workforce Development

Our Work

CSTE’s Workforce Development activities enhance the knowledge, skills, and abilities among applied epidemiologists at state, local, tribal, and territorial health agencies. Using the Epidemiology Capacity Assessment (ECA), CSTE periodically assesses the abilities and training needs of the workforce. CSTE uses ECA data to provide relevant networking and continuing education opportunities for on-the-job training. CSTE offers training opportunities mapped to relevant professional development objectives and the Applied Epidemiology Competencies. Many trainings are available on-demand at cste.learn.org. Our learning activities aim to upskill the existing workforce and provide additional capacity to the applied epidemiology workforce.

CSTE’s Applied Epidemiology Fellowship (AEF) program trains recent graduates in the field of applied epidemiology. AEF offers opportunities for experiential learning to further develop expertise and gain invaluable, hands-on career guidance and networking opportunities at a state or local health agency. After completing the two-year training, most fellow graduates continue to work in applied epidemiology at state and local health departments.
