Infectious Disease: Vaccine-Preventable Diseases

Subcommittee Chairs:

Chas DeBolt, RN, MPH (WA)

Jessica Kumar, DO, MPH (NY State)

Vaccine ShotThe Vaccine-Preventable Diseases (VPD) Subcommittee meets monthly to discuss current epidemiology and surveillance issues as well as overarching topics related to VPDs, including ongoing and emerging outbreaks, lessons learned from past outbreaks, updates from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and vaccination recommendations, and resources, tools, and publications to support health department VPD activities. The Subcommittee frequently engages partners in the CDC National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD), including the Immunization Services Division (ISD), Division of Viral Diseases (DVD), and Influenza Division (ID), to provide the national perspective on priority VPD topics such as measles, Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM), and COVID-19.

In addition to updates from our CDC partners, the Subcommittee provides a forum for state and local jurisdictions to seek feedback from others and share their experiences on the range of VPD-related topics. Although there are no standing workgroups within the Subcommittee, ad-hoc working groups are convened as needed, especially to support the development of VPD-related CSTE position statements. Previous workgroups that led to the passing of a CSTE position statement include AFM, pertussis, and diphtheria.
