REMINDER: The Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) is accepting new applications from state and local public health agencies to host a fellow in the Applied Epidemiology Fellowship (AEF) program.

The deadline to submit Host Site Applications is Friday, November 1, 2019

The application to host a Class 18 AEF fellow for two years beginning in July 2020 is now open. Modeled after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) EIS program, the fellowship is designed to give recent public health graduates on-the-job training at health departments in preparation for a career as an epidemiologist at the state or local level. Under the guidance of experienced mentors, fellows are expected to develop applied epidemiologic skills through training at the health department. The fellowship is open to recent graduates with master’s and doctoral degrees who have academic training in epidemiology.

CSTE is currently accepting host site applications in the following program areas:

NEW - Birth Defects & Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS)
Chronic Disease
Injury-Drug Overdose
Environmental Health
Infectious Diseases (including HAI, Quarantine, and Food Safety)
Injury
Occupational Health
Maternal and Child Health
Substance Use/Mental Health

Fellows are supported by CDC funding and are matched to a program area within the health department. State/local health departments can apply to host more than one fellow, but a separate application must be completed for each position.

Application Information: Host site applications should describe the fellowship assignment within a specified program area, supervision, support structure, and workspace proposed for the fellow. All applications must include a letter of support from the State Epidemiologist. Complete applications will be reviewed by CSTE and evaluated on:
  • The scope, quality, and diversity of experience offered to the fellow
  • Experience of mentors in epidemiology, applied public health, and mentoring
  • Professional development opportunities and support provided for the fellow
  • Availability of work space, computer/equipment, and host site support
  • Letters of support for the mentors

Please note that submission and/or acceptance of a host site application does not guarantee placement of a fellow at your agency.
