New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and Office of Chief Medical Examiner

New York City is home to approximately 8.4 million residents. The five counties within New York City are served by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) and the Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME). The DOHMH and OCME exist as separate agencies but have a long history of strong collaboration and mutual support. The DOHMH operates New York City’s Public Health Laboratory where the OCME sends specimens for microbiology testing. The OCME performs its postmortem examinations in its three mortuaries in Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn. During COVID-19, the OCME also managed temporary disaster long term storage facilities for decedents.
